This past weekend the Oregon Ducks traveled to San Diego where they resulted in a split with a 3-4 loss on Friday and 4-0 victory on Saturday. SDSU kicked off the scoring in the first period, followed by a goal from sophomore #10 Bobby Anselmo assisted by freshman #98 Andrew Kaunas. Freshman #14 Donovan Bradford gave Oregon the lead early in the second period with a power-play goal assisted by freshman #22 Loghan Weber.
SDSU responded with three goals in the third period, putting Oregon behind 4-2. Freshman #12 Lewis Majkozak scored halfway through the period, assisted by sophomore #3 Austin Kluksdahl, but the Ducks fell short, losing 4-3 despite outshooting SDSU 41-24.
Oregon responded Saturday with a 4-0 shutout. Weber opened the scoring in the first period, followed by three third-period goals from Kaunas, Weber and sophomore #2 Jackson Ebbott. Sophomore goaltender #29 Thomas Cafarelli stopped every shot sent this way, securing the shutout.
Head coach Jack Hyman credited their improvement in defensive play for Saturday’s turnaround.
“We outshot them 41-24. Their goalie played great, but the areas we lacked in, special teams and defending the front of the net, really came back to bite us. We did much better in the second game,” Hyman said.
Cafarelli also pointed to the team’s improved preparation heading into the second game.
“After a loss, it's definitely tough, but I thought our preparation for game two was way better than game one, and that just shows on the scoreboard,” Cafarelli said.
WIth the series split, Oregon now shifts its focus to Colorado State for another weekend on the road. With a past of back-and-forth results against the Rams in recent seasons, the upcoming matchup will be the perfect opportunity to gain an edge.
“I'm excited. Colorado's a pretty good team. They split with us last time, so they're a good team. It'll be a fun weekend,” junior Carson Streich said.
Freshman Zack Machoian is also looking forward to the challenge, believing Oregon has what it takes to come out on top.
“Going into the weekend against Colorado, it's definitely going to be two pretty big games. The last few years, it's been a bit back and forth, but I think this year we can definitely pull through with two wins and come out on top,” Machoian said.
Oregon now has its sights set on Colorado State, hoping to come away with a series sweep.
